Warton Crag, Carnforth, Lancashire

December 2022

The Christmas food shop was prodding me this morning. But we made the wise decision to do the supermarket late evening instead - on the assumed promise that it would be much quieter.

So with a newly free afternoon we decided to hit the hills (or the crag). I changed into proper suitable outdoor gear.

(I look in the mirror and I don't recognise myself like this - sponsored by Karrimor.)

I'd taken some yr3 school kids on a mini hiking trip in the Spring to Warton Crag, and at the time had my eye on the Old School Brewery by the car park, vowing to return one day (without kids). I recognised it on the sharp left off the main village. It looked warm and inviting. Christmassy.

But first...the crag.

The ground was wet and muddy. But the weather was fair and despite the layers that I'd felt initially necessary, I ended up furiously pocketing the hat, gloves and neck thing (later identified as a 'gaiter').

We missed the trig because we ventured on following the red route. The view was pretty impressive from the highest point though.

The Old School Brewery upon our return at the foot of the crag did not disappoint. Wooden benches, crates, barrels and reels for tables, blankets, other people's dogs and fairy lights. Pies, sausage rolls, chips and gravy.

We armed ourselves with drinks and comfort food, and whilst warming up under a few of the scattered blankets, we considered returning for one of the live music sessions.
