#7 - ‘A Frosty Welcome’ @ Lake Windermere, Bowness on Windermere, The Lake District

Well, it had been ages. And if I’m being honest I’d got used to the shallow comfort of a waterfall. Where you can see that there are no fish. No big ones at least anyway. But we were seeking convenience today, because it was Boxing Day. And by convenience I mean the nearby Boat House. We’d been last year after a winter dip and there was a guy playing live, Pogue-esqe, right up our street. We were hoping for more of the same.

The dip itself was…refreshing. I was out of practice. I’d forgotten my neoprene socks, swimsuit and gloves. The socks I’d say are an essential. Putting a wetsuit on naked wasn’t as traumatic as I thought it would be (something had felt wrong about it being directly in contact with my bits and pieces) but going in without the socks killed me. I genuinely thought I may have put myself at risk of frostbite on my toes. From my toes to my ankles I was bright red and stinging badly.

Still, what’s a dip without a bit of costume drama?

(There was a live performer in the Boathouse that day…but much more wannabe John Legend than Shane MacGowan)
